The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) announced it will be distributing roughly $333 million in first round payments to over 10,000 nursing homes for showing significant reductions in COVID-19 related infections and deaths this fall.

Nursing homes started to receive payment incentives starting the week of November 1st, 2020, and will have four more opportunities to obtain further incentive payments. A state breakdown showing incentive payments from this first cycle is available here. It will be updated by HHS to capture all recipients as incentive payouts continue.

This is in addition to the almost $10 billion in funding to Skilled Nursing Facilities and nursing homes announced in both May and August. HHS distributed $2.5 billion of the August contribution in early September to assist nursing homes with upfront expenses for testing, staffing and personal protective equipment (PPE) needed for the fight against COVID-19. This payment structure is aimed at rewarding nursing homes for keeping COVID-19 mortality and infection rates lower among residents based on the communities they serve.
