New Provider-Based Practice Location Type Options Now Available in PECOS!
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has implemented critical updates in the Provider Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System (PECOS), expanding how hospitals report provider-based practice locations.
Effective immediately, PECOS includes new “Provider-Based Department Site Type” options to better classify hospital-based service locations. This update is designed to improve compliance, accuracy, and alignment with CMS regulations.
New Location Types Include:
- Off-campus of the main provider (does not satisfy the definition of “campus” at 42 CFR 413.65(a)(2))
- On the “campus” of the main provider (as defined at 42 CFR 413.65(a)(2))
- Remote location of a hospital (as defined at 42 CFR 413.65(a)(2))
- Dedicated emergency department (ED) (as described at 42 CFR 489.24(b))
- Excepted off-campus (temporary or permanent) due to extraordinary circumstances (per 42 CFR 419.48(b))
- Mobile facility or portable unit (excepted off-campus per 42 CFR 419.48(b))
- Approved Mid-build
Important: CMS has automatically assigned a location type to existing hospital practice locations. However, Advis has identified inconsistencies in many of these assignments that could affect compliance and Medicare reimbursement.
We strongly recommend that all hospitals:
- Review their PECOS enrollment data
- Verify that all provider-based locations are correctly classified
- Make updates to avoid compliance risks or reimbursement delays
Don’t risk delays or compliance issues—contact Advis today for guidance and support in navigating these important PECOS updates.
