Starting September 30, 2024, Ohio will no longer be the only state not licensing hospitals. Hospitals currently operating in Ohio must obtain a license by the September 30th deadline, and new hospitals opening after the deadline must obtain a license prior to opening for business.
Before the enactment of the licensure requirements outlined in Ohio Revised Code Chapter 3722, hospitals simply had to register with the state. As part of the new licensure process, hospitals will need to fill out an application and provide information similar to what was required as part of the registration process including hospital information, accreditation/certification status, ownership, classification and bed count.
The enactment of Chapter 3722 also required the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) to develop regulations that would govern the licensure process, requirements, and penalties by September 20, 2022. While that deadline has long since passed with no finalized regulations, ODH has published draft regulations which can be found here: https://odh.ohio.gov/about-us/offices-bureaus-and-departments/ogc/draft-rules/draft-rule-3701-22.
